ANGERONA, Ann'-Jer-Oh'-Nah.... |
the roman goddess of secrecy. Not much is known about Angerona but it is thought that she was the guardian of ancient Rome’s secret name. It was believed that if a secret name of someone or something was known the person or thing could be controlled, even against their will. No doubt many roman citizens prayed to her to help their secrets safe and their indiscretions quiet. She was depicted with her eyes bandaged, her mouth gagged and a finger held to her mouth cautioning silence. It shouldn’t be too surprising that very little is known about her; after all she was supposed to be very good at keeping secrets!
Secret names giving those who know them power? Doesn’t that sound a lot like passwords?
